The United Nations is pressing for companies to introduce systems in which the prices of goods and services partly reflect the environmental costs of their production, use and disposal. This would mean that less harmful goods would be cheaper than those that caused more environmental damage. Such an ‘environment tax’ might provide funds for restoring habitats and cleaning up pollution caused during the lifetimes of certain products.
