Energy Indicators

Energy is important because it supports our economy, having an important role in the provision of goods and services. However, energy production does have its environmental effects. The combustion of fossil fuels is the main cause of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Nuclear energy is safe if managed properly, although the potential impacts of an accident at a nuclear plant are huge. In addition, the decommissioning of a nuclear power station can be very expensive. The combustion of fossil fuels and the emission of air pollutants and greenhouse gases are indirectly controlled by national and international agreements such as the National Air Quality Strategy, Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.

Energy Indicators

  • Energy intensities

This indicator expresses the energy supply per unit of GDP and per capita. These intensities help reflect changes in energy efficiency and pollutant emissions.

  • Energy mix

This indicator highlights the changes in energy supply, reflecting shifts from fossil fuels to renewable energy and nuclear fuels.
